Term II: 24th April to 26th June
Drawing and Painting Foundations 2: Colour and Light
Fridays | 10:00 – 12:30 | 10 weeks
Course fee: £360
Drawing & Painting Foundations 2: Colour and Light is a structured 10-week studio course that develops students’ understanding of form through light, shadow and colour. Building on the principles introduced in Ways of Seeing & Drawing, the course moves beyond line into tonal modelling and mass drawing, using charcoal to develop confident control of value, structure and atmosphere.
In the second half of the term, students apply this tonal understanding to colour through disciplined work in soft pastel, exploring colour temperature, reflected light and chromatic structure. Working from plaster casts in carefully lit studio setups, and through guided demonstrations, participants complete sustained observational studies culminating in a resolved portrait project. The course is suitable for both returning students and newcomers with some basic drawing experience.
Portrait Painting in Oils
Fridays | 14:00 – 17:00
10 weeks
Course fee: £450 (6 spaces remaining)
Portrait Painting in Oils is a focused 10-week studio course exploring the craft of painting the human head from life. Working with professional models, students develop a clear understanding of portrait structure, proportion and likeness while learning to organise light and colour in oil paint. Through demonstrations and guided studio work, the course emphasises careful observation, strong drawing and disciplined tonal and colour relationships.
Across the term, students learn to build a portrait step by step — from initial block-in to a resolved painting — while developing practical techniques for handling oil paint and simplifying complex visual information. With small class sizes and sustained work from the live model, the course provides a supportive environment for both returning students and painters with some prior drawing or painting experience who want to develop their portrait practice.
